La directora, Isabel Coixet, logra transmitir a través de la diná-mica lingüística de los personajes un sinfín de emociones vitales que van desde el sufrimiento más pro-fundo, pasando por el aislamiento y el desamparo, hasta un completo vacio existencial. Hanna vive com-pletamente aislada y sola en el norte de Irlanda, en Belfast, después de haber logrado sobrevivir múltiples violaciones y la pérdida de su única hija durante la guerra de los Balcanes. La ambivalencia entre vida y muerte o lo que supone vivir muerta entre vivos es la constante que hilvana la transformación de esta mu-jer. El sentido de la vida adquiere un nuevo cariz desde el prisma personal de una superviviente de guerra. Abstract: This study proposes to analyze the language and its symbolic representations in the film The secret life of words as symbolic and cathartic factors, specially referring to the life of the main feminine character, Hanna. Thanks to the language dynamics and relations among the main characters, the director, Isabel Coixet, succeeds in offering us a wide representation of emotions that go from the deepest suffering, the isolation, neglect to a complete void in life. Hanna lives completely isolated and alone in the north of Ireland, in Belfast, after she has survived torture and multiple rapes during the Balkan war. The dichotomy between life and death, and living an empty-meaningless life is the constant theme in this woman’s everyday existence and transformation.
